Kill Your Television...

Hundreds of channels and nothing to watch?

Ever find yourself putting on your television and flicking through the channels just to find something to watch? Sound familiar?

For decades television has been the opiate of the masses. Whilst there are many programmes that educate and inform, those that entertain, and those that leave us inspired. There are many more that serve no purpose other than to deaden the senses. To kill your creativity and your want to use your imagination in entertaining ourselves. No more so than reality TV. The thing is, these shows couldn't be further detached from reality in every possible sense.

Growing up in the UK in the 70's and 80's we had three channels to choose from. This expanded to four in the early 80's and to be honest it feels like my generation is one of the last to not have television imposed on them. We found ways to stimulate our minds. Ironically, there was a kids show called 'Why Don't You' which had the inspired tag line "Why Don't You Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Go Out and Do Something Less Boring Instead?"

I remember this striking a chord with me at the time, and it has stuck with me all these years later. Sadly generations since would rather stare at the (not so) 'Small Screen' in the hope that eventually something will come on that rewards the monotony of the wait.

I plead with you all, turn off your TV set and go out and do something less boring instead! Honestly, you will thank me.

So, put down that remote, put on your coat and explore the world around you.
