Black Hole Sun...

So yesterday we learned of another great talent who's light has been snuffed out too soon. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden fame. A distinctive voice and mournful lyricist, never afraid to expose his soul in his writings.

For whatever reasons he decided to take his life. Some may judge this as an act of cowardice, for those he leaves behind. The way I see it there can be no judgement. Not really. Not ever.

How can someone be persecuted for having such despair? This cannot have been an easy decision. Imagine the torment he had in those final moments. I think of the opening lyric to 'Black hole sun', where he starts with 'In my eyes, indisposed. In disguises no one knows'. Those two lines have never been more relevant for the dark times hidden within.

This applies to so many who have sadly seen no other way but to end their life. Sadly it is not just limited to celebrities, 'tortured' with success or excess. The truth is mental illness affects so many. It can be the 'black dog' that follows with every step you take. It can be the rain clouds in your mind on a summers day. It can be the feeling of complete and utter despair that leaves you feeling that you have nothing left to live for, nothing left to give - even when in someone else's eyes you have everything.

One of my favourite songs of all time is R.E.M - Everybody Hurts. Penned by Michael Stipe after the loss of two close friends River Phoenix and Kurt Cobain. Two young talents, who to the outside world had everything to live for, but inside had everything to die for. A song that shows that no matter what, hold on. You are not alone no matter how lonely you may feel. That song will forever be a beacon of hope for those who 'need' to hear it.

When your day is long

And the night

The night is yours alone

When you're sure you've had enough

Of this life

Well hang on

Don't let yourself go

'Cause everybody cries

And everybody hurts sometimes

Please hold on...
