Red wire, green wire...?

Don’t cut the red wire? Have you ever watched a movie where the intrepid hero is facing a potentially catastrophic situation of having to make the decision of cutting the red wire or the green wire to defuse a bomb and save the day? Yet somehow they always manage to make the right decision just as the seconds tick ever closer to zero.

What if I told you that in life, every decision you make has the potential to be the right one?

If you make a reasoned decision based on all the evidence you have, and your experience in life so far, then you are making the right decision. This is what makes the rationale behind your choices. You are potentially defusing the bomb.

Having the courage and conviction to make a decision makes you stand out among the many because even though you won’t see it at the time, you are showing the strength of mind and of character to take charge in any given situation. Effectively you are becoming a ‘manager in a moment’. You are taking the responsibility for whatever the given situation.

Professionally, I feel that as a manager it vital to always try to encourage those I have worked with to feel confident in making decisions, but with the reassurance that they will be supported in the decisions they make. I take the same stance with my kids. Why? It’s easy; because motivation breeds innovation.

Encouragement is the key. However, this is not always the case. I have seen first hand, and through others, what happens when there is a reluctance to make a decision and commit.

A decision made with reason and best intentions is rarely wrong. Red wire or green wire, it doesn’t matter as long as you have the conviction to see it through.
