Imagine what would happen if 7 billion people respected each other?
I’m not going to sit here as I write this and be naive to think that it will ever happen. It is possible, but perhaps only in my dreams...
Sadly there are too many differences of opinion for that to happen. Nothing to do with difference of culture - that is something that is critical to understand. Being of a different cultural background should not make anyone a threat, the complete opposite. It should make you an interest. A chance to learn of another’s way of life. A difference of opinion is healthy. But should only ever be used to inspire not incite. It should be founded upon experience and research from a reputable source, never word of mouth or what is printed in a tabloid. Ignorance is not an excuse for ones behaviour.
Unfortunately too many people use social media to share posts without checking their validity, how many times have you seen a post that has the wording “99% of people are afraid to share are you?” These kinds of posts are created with one thing in mind and one thing only: to be self populating spam of those who have no intention of checking the validity or undertone of the post. Often they express views that lend themselves to behaviours that have no place in modern society or culture.
If something is offensive the best thing to do is unfollow, unfriend or block. Keyboard warriors are hiding behind the anonymity of their words. It has nothing other than a placebo affect on bravery.
So back to the getting along thing, the respecting thing. It starts with one single thing; the appreciation that not everyone is the same as you. Conquer that thought and you have the capability to conquer the world. Think about it as a tsunami, that one small thought will build into an understanding. That in turn builds into an appreciation, and before you know it you have the force of a giant wave carrying your thoughts and your mind further than you ever thought possible.
Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend...
