P.D.P and Me...

This week I have been involved in a really interesting project starting to look at personal development planning.

I was instantly drawn to the subject because I am fascinated by it. For me it is more than the stereotypical approach of “where do you see yourself in 5yrs”. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having a picture of life in 5yrs. But there is more can be derived from it. It’s about evoking a train of thought that makes us look at not just where we want to be, but also how we plan to get there.

What if we take it even further and we think more than just how and why, but to go even deeper and effectively carry out a gap analysis on where you are at this very moment and what you’re going to need or will need to do to get you where you want to be.

It’s not about setting out to rule the world (but nobody’s stopping you if you want it bad enough). Instead it’s about finding within yourself what you aspire to be or what you want to have in life. This is when we can set goals and benchmark our journey towards getting to them.

How many of us have an annual appraisal in our career? Probably most of us, right? These appraisals are absolutely critical (in my humble opinion). They help to guide us in firstly knowing we are performing to the desired level to meet the expectations of the business, but more importantly to give us something to aim for so we can more than meet and push to exceed or excel in what we do.

This should be applied to all aspects of your life too. You set out to be all you can be. To be happy, to have satisfaction. To be successful doesn’t necessarily mean to have riches. To be successful means to have what you long for, cherish and desire.

To be successful is to be you to the fullest. Educate yourself in what you want, make it your passion, and then make it yours.

When we know better, we should do better...
