When You’re Weary...

When you’re weary, feeling small...

The iconic opening line to Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. A song that means many things to many people. For me it rings out support to one another. Every verse filled with compassion, a hug for the angst.

The world today has a way of making us weary, of taking us to exhaustion and elation momentarily, frequently and in need of someone to be there. This song is a reminder that you can be there for others. To be that bridge and to give the support needed to give someone passage through that very moment, through that day, maybe even through life and all it’s complexities along the way.

All too often people can hold back, whether it be that moment when you see someone struggle but choose not to step forward to lend a hand. It can be absolutely anything, but it’s the gesture of helping. It’s even better when you do it instinctively just because in that very moment you can. For example, last night I was in the grocery store and I happened to notice a lady stretching to try and retrieve an item from the top shelf in the bread aisle. She couldn’t quite reach and yet others nonchalantly walked by. As I was walking along the aisle I simply reached up and lifted down the item she was struggling to get, and just smiled as I reached it to her before walking on. It’s the simple things that make up the big things. It’s the ability to do something quickly and easily and still do it rather than assume it doesn’t matter or someone else will.

The same can be said of being the kind of person who will just be there. I am incredibly lucky to have that, but I too will be there for anyone. I will never see anyone stuck in anyway if I can possibly help.

We all know the concept of paying it forward, this kind of mentality matters. You can begin to realise how good it feels to do random acts of kindness and for someone to know you are there for them. No matter what.

It’s not even about having a clear conscience. It’s about having that level of inner peace that comes from knowing you are doing your best for others, which in turn comes with the knowledge you are doing the best for you. The calmness at the end of the day when you rest your weary head, but instead of feeling small you feel big in the world as you close your eyes and drift off to peaceful, comforting sleep.

When you fall asleep where do you go...?
