It Doesn’t Make it Alright...

This week the world has witnessed another completely inexcusable death of a person due to unnecessary brutality.

George Floyd lost his life because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and ultimately with the wrong coloured skin. It is so sad that we continue to see examples of this happen in the world, and worst still they all are completely unnecessary.

I have watched the video of his arrest. At no point was there a struggle, save for the struggle for breath, which slipped away as breath did not come. Only the blood from his nose as life ebbed away.

I heard the death rattle as he gasped for oxygen but failed, failed due to the knee on his neck. A knee on his neck of an officer who had his hands in his pockets - where was the control? At which point was the arresting officer in any way in control of what he was doing ? More to the point, with his hands in his pockets it is arguable that the intention was there all along.

Those last words can be heard:

Please I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe - don’t kill me.

It’s haunting to think that has been captured and shared worldwide. I like so many others have witnessed him become unresponsive and you just know that his life has left him. And for what?

Sadly, whilst the officers involved have been instantly dismissed by Minneapolis Police Department, there remains a family without their loved one. Undoubtably there will be an investigation that will take time, and untold costs. But still, George Floyd will not be alive to hear the outcome. His family will only have hollow words to hold on to, as no matter what the outcome, their bother/son/uncle will not be coming home.

Nothing that can come out of this can possibly make this alright. Not even remotely can this ever be alright. The onset of violence in the streets afterwards, which at the time of writing this has also seen another man shot dead amidst rioting. None of this will make it alright. A call for peace and dignity will be a start, but only because it is what is needed to stop it happening again - for now anyway.

All lives matter!

It doesn't make it alright,

It doesn't make it alright.

It's the worst excuse in the world

And it, it doesn't make it alright...
