What if we could spread positivity, tolerance and happiness as quickly as we spread hate and negativity? Just think about how amazing that would be?
What if we took that as a lesson before posting on social media? What if we take an extra moment before pressing ‘post’ to think about what we are putting out there. Something that sadly very few seem to do, as there are all too often posts shared that are factually incorrect and do nothing but to perpetrate hate, ignorance and intolerance. If you believe in this kind of thinking, then perhaps it’s time to unlearn what you think is right.
When it comes to putting anything out there on any form of social media, whether they be your words or something you share, have you actually taken the time to think about what you are putting your name to? I know I’ve written this before, but in the last week or so it is absolutely vile the hatred and intolerance being posted or shared blindly. So now more than ever it is absolutely crucial to take on board 3 simple steps:
- Is it true?
- Is it kind?
- Is it necessary?
The first one is often the most overlooked. I cannot urge this enough - you must fact check what you see before sharing it. Especially in these uncertain times, where tensions are running particularly high. A lot of crap is being put out there that simply isn’t true, or has been embellished beyond belief. This is also true of anything you share that is derived from a hate group. By default as soon as you press post you are affiliated with them and once it is out there in the ether it can never be undone - irrespective of you pressing delete or not.
We have the power of unlimited knowledge at our finger tips, yet so many only use it to spread unnecessary and inflammatory untruths because they have not looked past a sensationalistic heading. The type of which should stay in the gutter where it belongs.
