Petrichor...

This week, like most of the U.K. I have been enjoying the sunshine as the temperatures stayed consistently above 30c. The only downside is at night time when it doesn’t fall below 20c. This is when sleeping becomes a quest, often exhaustion kicking in during the small hours and the sandman he comes by.

Ok, so the U.K. isn’t renowned for its blisteringly hot weather, especially my home country of Northern Ireland. But this morning I noticed something I haven’t noticed for a while. The smell of the grass and plants as the first rain in a couple of weeks had come to pass. If it weren’t for the sweet smell of the earth, after a couple of hours there would have been no evidence of the rain at all.

There is a word to describe it ‘Petrichor’.

What I love about it is that despite the times when it rains constantly, after a dry spell the rain hydrates the earth and in turn the earth gives back its very own perfume. Who can tell me they don’t enjoy the scent of cool wet grass?

So this got me thinking that it’s the same when we haven’t done or had something we enjoy for a while, or seen someone we haven’t seen for a while. It makes us feel good. It makes us happy and it takes us to a better place. Just by the very relationship of emotive and happiness, it helps us understand that just as we have triggers for things that can make us sad or unhappy, equally and more powerfully so, we also have triggers that bring us moments of contentment and happiness.

Think of it as finding out the things or people that have the same equivalent of cool wet grass to the senses. To your mind and to your heart.

Be the version of you that brings all this and more.

Wake up and smell the world around you...
