Ebb & Flow, and being that Seagull...

One of the things I truly love is to be by the sea. There is something so powerful yet so tranquil about the sound of the ocean. The sound of the waves crashing onto the shoreline with a crescendo, before slipping away under the next wave as it comes to its rest on the shore. I suppose it is just like life, we build and grow in strength as we go, pushing ever forwards to reach our destination, only to slip away in the end as the next generation comes behind.

The ebb and flow of the tide, so hypnotic yet so alluring. It’s essentially natures metronome.

With the background of the waves occasionally comes the call of a gull. Perhaps the most boisterous of bird, but yet so intriguing. Here we have a bird that spends vast amounts of time over the ocean, but now is equally at home by the shore and in some cases in urban environments. They have character - bags of it. Whenever I see one it reminds me of Richard Bach’s tale ‘Jonathan Livingstone Seagull’, a fable about making the most of our live, even if our goals are different to the norms of what is expected by society or even our peers. The metaphor of flight showing that if you live for life, then you too can soar. You become the best at doing what you love. How amazing is that? It’s an important message that, with a desire to achieve, we can be the very best at what we love and what matters most to us. Remember that the next time you spot a seagull.

While we amble along the shoreline we get engulfed in the freshness of the sea air. Especially at this time of year, now that summer is quietly tucked away to rebirth next year, the weather is changing to colder crisper days. Even on a rainy day it is beautiful and so cleansing. The energy you feel as you walk along, the cold breeze kissing your face and the resultant rosy cheeks and red nose a temporarily symbolic of health and wellness.

Irrespective of how long we spend in that environment there is always the welcome return indoors. Ready for a hot drink and the welcome warmth of being out of the elements. The sort of of drink that brings warmth with the first sip and comfort with each thereafter.

Irrespective of what the weather is like this weekend, go to the ocean. Go and refresh your soul. You’ll only be cold if you dress inappropriately, but you’ll glow with the freedom and the simplicity of life in that very moment.

Being by the ocean on days like these is invigorating. It’s like hot chocolate for the soul...
