How often do we call a business, only to be greeted by an automated answer? You know the sort - press 1 for service, press 2 for sales etc etc. Don’t get me wrong, I think these systems have a really important part to play in service provision as it empowers the caller to direct their own call right from the start. Unfortunately, there can be potential for it failing when they end up on hold for an eon or get answered by someone who doesn’t or can’t help.
I am passionate about service provision because I have always strived to give the level of service I would expect to receive. I want to know that whoever deals with me understands what I need and does all they can to get me there.
This is the simplest of concepts, but so often undervalued.
The provision of service is basically empathy and then using the resources available to do your best for someone. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. If you think about it, there should be no differentiation between service provision and the provision of empathy to another. We all have the capacity to help someone. You don’t need to have a sack of cash to do it, all you need is a ‘want’ to do it.
When you want to help, or be helped for that matter, then it becomes so much easier. Not only does it become easier, it becomes rewarding wether you are giving or receiving the help. You become engaged in the process of being part of a resolve. Never underestimate how rewarding that can be for the soul.
So just like when you get the automated operator, sometimes it's easy to forget that you always have options. Never forget that you can always get to ‘re-hear the options again’. That’s incredibly important. It means that we never have to just settle for something, when we know there could be greater things ahead.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the essence of you has remained intact - maybe altered a bit by your journey, by the trials and tribulations along the way. But intact, in that you remain you at the very core of your being.
And that everything, up until now, has just been practice for the really, really good stuff yet to come.
So when you get options in life and have the choice of which buttons to press, remember you are in control. Every choice you make will be reasoned and is right at that moment in time.
Press 1 for service, or maybe just wait til you hear the full menu...
