Bad Days and Rusty Onions…

As we are now at the end of mental health awareness week, it’s important to always remember that sometimes it’s ok to not be ok. Everyone can have an off day, even a few. But it’s ok. Really, it is ok.

Sometimes we have days, or weeks that just seem to bring us down. The type that no matter how positive you try to be, sometimes it’s hard to keep your head up. It can feel like it’s totally out of your control, and on the face of it it may be. But that’s only on the top layer. Sometimes it’s a rusty onion. A bit of a strange analogy I know, but it’s the best I can think of to describe it. Every time you peel back a layer, there seems to be more erosion.

I think that sometimes if our mood slips, it can be hard to pull it back on our own. Just like with the rusty onion, it can be easy to believe that each layer is another layer of troubled times. Good and bad stuff happens to us and all around us every single day. If we focus on the bad, then we miss the good. What’s worth taking note of is that the good can be small things. The problem here is that sometimes we miss the small things without even realising. If we are doing that subconsciously, then by default it also increases our chances of missing the bigger good things in life too. Trust me, you don’t want to miss any of it. Look for the positive, it is there, and if you look - and I mean really look, you’ll start to see it all around you.

The important thing to remember is that no matter how many layers you need to peel back, there is always good in there for you. Always!

If you’re looking for a starting point;

Make a list of things that make you happy.

Make a list of things you do everyday.

Compare the lists,

Adjust accordingly…
