10,000 Species…

In the last week the Northern White Rhino has now become functionally extinct.

So what?

Actually, this is (was) a truly magnificent beast that had evolved over the last 55 million years. Not just this, but it had survived ice ages, meteor strikes, numerous earthquakes and extremes of weather. It survived innumerable changes to the world and lived through it all. Except, sadly it couldn’t survive the human race.

It is so terribly sad that an animal that has been around in one guise or other for 55 million years, has been eradicated from the planet by another species that’s only been have only been around in current form for 200,000 years.

The really disturbing bit is there are currently, on average, 10,000 species going extinct each and every year. 10,000 - that is a seriously concerning amount. Sadly, this is increasing all the time. We aren’t slowing down and we aren’t making it better. Well, not yet.

We all have a responsibility to care for what is around us. For everything that lives in harmony and coexists with us in whatever capacity, and in whatever setting.

We need to make conscious decisions regarding the impact we make. The unnecessary butchering of such beautiful animals as the Northern White Rhino is a stark reminder to us all, that even such an imposing beast cannot survive if we chose for it not to. We need to chose to save endangered species by our actions. By our interactions with nature. We need to show our respect wherever we go, because when we enter this mindset, we carry ourselves in a way that is kinder to the world.

We have the capacity to slow down the extinction. Think about that. We, you, me, everyone has the ability to make a difference. So let’s do something about it. Do anything.

Make today the day you start to appreciate the world just that little bit more…
