It’s a Dogs Life…

How often have you heard someone say “It’s a dogs life”? You know, when they bemoan the simplest of things just because it’s easier to whine than be happy. Or looking to blame someone/something else for their situation.

The truth is, I don’t believe in that saying. Especially not as anyone lucky enough to have (or have had) a dog, knows that their life enriches yours. In multitudes that it is impossible to equate. In turn you give them the best life possible. It’s the smallest reward to them for the biggest reward they give to you.

That was definitely the case of Sapper, our English Springer Spaniel that sadly crossed the rainbow bridge this week at the ripe old age of 14yrs and 10mths. Up until the last couple of months of his life he had a zest for life that you could have mistaken him for a puppy. Bouncing around and always wanting to play fetch - but in true springer style, why settle for sticks when stones seemed much more fun??

The one thing I do know for sure is that he had a hell of a life. One that easily makes a mockery of that saying.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how rich, and enriched we are. We have our health, and the ability to function on whatever level it allows us to. It’s easy to forget that we have clean water to drink and hot water to bathe in. We can drive ourselves to the supermarket to buy whatever we want to eat, and if it’s warm - chances are we have air con in the car to keep us cool on the way there and back. When we get back we have a kitchen to cook in and somewhere comfortable to enjoy the meal. And maybe, just maybe, we have a dog too.

For me, when I think of “It’s a dogs life”, I think of wagging tails, loyalty and happiness. That ain’t so bad…
