The Right To…

The right for our children to not get shot massively outweighs the right to keep and bear arms.

The right for a group of people to attend a place of their worship and not get shot, outweighs the right to keep and bear arms.

The right for people to got to the supermarket and not get shot outweighs the right to keep and bear arms.

The right for anyone to attend a public place and not gets shot completely outweighs the right to keep and bear arms.

This month alone, all of the above have happened. All of the above have drawn anger, then silence, then nothing. All of the above outweighs the right to keep and bear arms.

The 2nd Amendment reads:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

‘A well regulated militia’? Alas this has fallen foul to its own words and the pretence that there is regulation. If a piece of legislation from 1791 kept people safe, America would be the safest country on earth.

In 1996 a man walked into a Scottish primary school, in the town of Dunblane. He carried 4 legally obtained handguns and over 700 rounds of ammunition. He opened fire killing 16 children and their teacher. 16 children who never made it to their 7th birthdays. An atrocity so bad that it still is fresh in the memories of everyone old enough in the U.K to remember it.

This week in Texas, there are now 19 children who won’t see their 11th birthday. Plus 2 of their teachers who fell with them. And for what?

This is the 27th school shooting of 2022 - and we are not even mid way through the year.

Thoughts and prayers are not enough…

  1. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Anyone with enough hatred in their hearts will find a way to murder innocents. Whether it be knives, a bomb, or someone driving a car into a crowd as happened in Waukesha at Christmas 2021. We in Northern Ireland suffered thirty years plus of armed violence under some of the most restrictive gun laws in the Western world. Legality means nothing. Criminals will always find a way to get their hands on guns, drugs or whatever.

A culture change is needed, not legislation. Roll back on violence depicted on both the big and small screens. Stop the glamourisation of thug life in rap, drill and grime music. Clamp down on supposed faiths that make the extermination of unbelievers a central tenet. Switzerland has similar gun laws to the USA, but nowhere near the same number of mass shootings. Why? Because the culture is different. If you sow the seeds of the violence, you will reap the harvest of murder.
