‘Tis The Season…

Now that the holiday season is rapidly approaching, and Christmas is just around the corner, it can be a particularly stressful time for many.

Currently in the U.K there is a cost of living crisis, with many being forced to chose between heating or eating. This in itself is fundamentally wrong. If, like in the U.K, you live in a first world country, then there should never be a situation like this. However, sadly this is the case now, as it is in many places around the world.

Add to this the over commercialisation of Christmas and it becomes a melting pot for damaging the mental health of so many. There will be countless parents out there trying to give their children the best possible Christmas, and the presents that Santa brings magically for the child to open on Christmas morning.

Unfortunately we have transcended into a spiral of spending more and more every year. It is a time when excess is encouraged.

The truth is younger kids don’t care. They genuinely don’t. The novelty of being able to open a box, irrespective of contents will make so many younger children happy. As they get older, it is up to us as parents to teach them to be grateful. You can give a spoilt child thousands of pounds/dollars worth of presents only for them to want more. Being thankful or appreciative of none.

However, a thankful child will be happy with whatever they get because they appreciate what they have. These are the kind of kids that grow up to be good human beings. These are the kind of kids that grow up and would help anyone who needs it. Whereas the spoilt kids will grow up to become the type of people that will never do anything for anyone without something in return. Even worse, there are those who will grow up to do nothing only take.

Each an every adult has a responsibility, irrespective of you are a parent or not. You have a responsibility to make the holiday season about people, not things. Make it a time of togetherness and sharing. When we share it doesn’t matter what the value of the stuff is, it’s sharing that counts. For me, isn’t it better see the faces of grateful people than the ambivalence of those who are ungrateful?

Remember; it’s not about the material stuff…
