Knowing and Doing…

How many of us know how to do something, but choose not to? Obviously this could be construed as a loaded question as there is capacity for doing good and bad. However, what I mean is when do you observe when you could be doing instead?

For some it is the lack of self belief that holds us back from stepping up and using our knowledge or skills before the wider audience. Even if that audience is just one other person. So what causes the hang up? Is it just because you haven’t done it before? Or is it because you’ve never been encouraged to do so before?

Think about it. Even though it might seem impossible to do, even though you know how; everything is impossible until the first time it’s done. Don’t let yourself get caught up in doubt.

At the same time there will be others who ‘talk the talk’. Those among us who will be more vocal than most and claim to do pretty much everything under the sun. The coffee break experts. These are the kind of people who are simultaneously amusing and tedious. Amusing for the fact that their veiled disguise of knowledge is thinner than the gossamer of a spiders web. Yet still a web of smoke and bullshit that draws in the unsuspecting victim eager to hear more. Don’t engage with these kinds of people. You won’t learn from them and always remember that knowledge and experience and the same but completely different, and you cannot have one without the other. Learn to differentiate between a ‘know all’ and ‘know how’.

Knowing how, and doing it are two different things.

Knowledge is most powerful when it’s shared…
