Still Life Beauty…

Recently I had a discussion with an old friend about the concept of beauty. It was off the back of a photo of a celebrity who, like all of us has gotten older. However, like many celebrities, their journey has included cosmetic procedures. 

Celebrity culture, and that of anything labelled as ‘reality’ is beyond damaging. It imposes a misguided view on what is ‘attractive’, and could be be further from true beauty. 

The thing is, getting older is a privilege not afforded to many. Too many end their journey before age makes any significant changes to their bodies. How many edge towards the end of their time without ever having discovered a grey hair - and how many would give anything to get to the stage where they had a head full of grey hairs. This is something I am aware of, and something I have never taken for granted. 

Personally I believe people become more attractive as they get older. Why? Because they show themselves in their true skin rather than trying to impress through the illusion of ‘peacocking’ to look different to how they really are. That’s when real beauty shines through. Being happy in your own skin is more attractive than you realise. And so it should be. It’s not about applying filters to photographs, or being dressed to perfection, or a full face of make up. It’s about being comfortable to show up just as you are, and not pressured into doing otherwise. They used to say “The camera never lies”, yet now we see representations of images that have been filtered so heavily the truth couldn’t be further from the lens. Still life beauty still exists. 

Nobody should feel like their image needs to impress anyone. Everyone is naturally unique in their appearance, and should be celebrated for just that. 

When you look in the mirror, remember that youth was not wasted on you, nor should age ever be a factor…
